I don’t think that it is a surprise to anyone that we love color. It excites us, motivates us, and inspires us. And while we love to use it in bold ways, it is not the ideal scheme for every client. But something interesting we have noticed as interior designers, is that in most cases, regardless of how daring a role hue and saturation plays in the main living spaces, many are willing to get a little adventurous when it comes to the unsuspecting powder room. {source}

Let’s face it. You and your guests aren’t spending too much time in this space. It’s a short window of opportunity that allows a for big impact. The smaller wall, floor, and even ceiling planes create a concentrated dosage of elements. Details that might go unnoticed in a larger space with lots of eye catching distractions will be front and center here. That’s where the dramatic effect comes in. The easiest way to achieve this is by color, but don’t overlook lighting, fixtures, and accessories.

Unique Look with Hand-painted Stencil

Creating a bold effect in a small space does not have to be only from a bright, light hue. Consider going darker. With the right type of lighting and bright white fixtures to create contrast, you will achieve a high level of drama and intrigue. {image source}

Tile, Wall Paper, or Paint

There are so many ways to add color and interest into a small space like a powder room. Tile, wall paper, or simply paint. Don’t be too hesitant in increasing the saturation of color, that’s what adds the drama. If you’re using a bright color, you can tone it down some by simplifying other elements like choosing to use simply white finishes on all the other major pieces. {source} This pretty in pink space plays up the feminine aspects in the wall paper with a complimenting mirror but adds some contrast and interest with a clean, modern faucet and sink.{source}

Wall paper has always been a popular option for powder rooms, again because of the big impact with small use of material. But keep in mind it is a more permanent option.

Sometimes the Bold Option is a Darker Hue

You can also consider hiring an artist to create the same look, but with a hand painted stencil in your choice of color.
